Barnabas Leadership Ministries (BLM) was launched with the laying on of hands, accompanied with the prayer of dedication, on Thursday, 20 July 2006 in Oklahoma City. A ministry Development Meeting preceded this important event. Sam (pictured) shared how God imparted the vision, to start the Barnabas ministry, in his heart. This took place while he was on a short-term mission trip to Zimbabwe in July 2005.
The goal of BLM is to be a Barnabas to servant leaders across denominational, geographical and cultural lines in Africa. However it is to be more than just a helping hand. We seek to offer God through the person of Jesus Christ to those around us. It’s only Jesus who can save, keep and satisfy. In John 10:10, He reveals His mission in contrast to that of the devil: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
The children of Israel as God’s people committed two sins and followers of Christ sometimes find themselves in the same boat. Eugene H. Peterson, in the MESSAGE, highlights the two sins in such a clear way. He paraphrases them as follows:
“My people have committed a compound sin:
they’ve walked out on me, the fountain
Of fresh flowing waters, and then dug cisterns—
cisterns that leak, cisterns that are no better than sieves”
( Jeremiah 2:13)
It’s our hope and prayer that as a hand that encourages and equips servant leaders in the Body of Christ, we will point pastors and lay leaders to God. Thus they will seek to be cleansed and filled with the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit. May we be drawn closer to the One (God) who can meet all our felt and real needs.
