“But seek first the kingdom of God and His Righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33).
It is this verse that gives rise to Sam’s motto of FIRST THINGS FIRST. He believes that if we seek the first things first, we will get the second things as well. But if we seek the second things first, we will miss both.
Sam Kirui’s joy in serving others is apparent to all he meets, earning him the nickname “Smilin’ Sam” among his friends. This joy is apparent in his insatiable love of the Lord and desire to see the Gospel spread to all nations. Sam has dedicated his life to serving in this global outreach; teaching, leading, encouraging and equipping fellow believers in the Word. In March 2008, Sam founded Barnabas Leadership Ministries (BLM), a religious, educational, and charitable organization that encourages and equips leaders who will raise up others to become servant leaders for Christ.
GOD’S CALL TO REPENTANCE & SERVICE:
At the age of six, Sam began to attend his local church in Kericho, Kenya and began to hear powerful stories from the Bible. These stories, his Sunday School teacher and Pastor formed the basis of his understanding of Christ’s love. One day after church seven years later, on a dusty road towards home, Sam realized his lack of a relationship with Jesus Christ and prayed for repentance and Christ to dwell in him. In God’s continuing faithfulness, a camp speaker spoke on God’s call to the ministry. Prompted by the Holy Spirit, Sam surrendered his life to full-time Christian service and trusting God to give him the education and vision to carry out His will for Sam’s life.
CROSS-CULTURAL MINISTRY EXPERIENCE:
Sam has served in several aspects of church leadership in Kenya and the United States including Youth Minister, Lecturer, Senior Pastor, Church Planter and Worship Pastor. His seminary training brought him to Heritage Baptist Church which has acted as a Ministry Partner, aiding Sam in his ministry building. In fact, members of Heritage have teamed up with Sam in cross-cultural ministry work in Kenya, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Lord laid a vision on Sam’s heart to develop the Barnabas Ministry to cross geographical, cultural, and denominational boundaries and raise and encourage Christian leaders in Kenya and the surrounding countries. Now the ministry is reaching other countries outside of the African continent such as Peru, India, and Indonesia.
Sam began his theological studies at Kenya Highlands Bible College and eventually received a B.Sc. (Honors) in Pastoral Studies from Wesley College, and a Master of Divinity with emphasis in Pastoral Ministry from Wesley Biblical Seminary. He also received an Associate Teacher Diploma from the Evangelical Teacher Training Association, a Teacher Trainer certification by Evangelism Explosion III International and History and English Literature Recognition Awards from Wesley College. Beyond his Master’s degree, Sam did some studies toward a PhD in Organizational Leadership at Regent University, Virginia. Majoring in global leadership, Sam had the opportunity to be on a cohort with seven colleagues who represented four nationalities. The leadership lessons he learned from Regent are enhancing Sam’s personal and professional goals. Beginning in July 2015, Sam transferred to Biola University in Southern California where he is pursuing a PhD in Intercultural Studies. Upon graduation, he plans to teach at an institution of higher learning as well as do cross-cultural ministry focusing on leadership and discipleship among other subjects.
Sam doesn’t know what the future holds but He knows who holds the future. He is, therefore, continuing to bloom where he has been planted and trusting the Lord in the next steps. As he awaits a teaching job in the near future, he continues to direct the work of Barnabas Leadership Ministries that the Lord laid on his heart in July 2005. He also works in conjunction with some Oklahoma churches to reach internationals in Oklahoma City. He covets your prayers and requests for your support in his ministry ventures.
In terms of ministry, Sam, until July 2014, served as the Worship Pastor of All Nations Church—an international ministry of Northwest Baptist Church in Oklahoma. Currently, he has serving as a Missionary-In-Residence at Heritage Church in Oklahoma City and Community Church in Guthrie, Oklahoma. He’s therefore involved in a number of ministries. Some of the ministries opportunities he has at the moment are: Heritage International Ministry through assisting in Sunday School teaching; mentoring some men; and communicating with pastors and church leaders in the Majority World. Sam also participates in weekly English Conversation Cafés for international students in a couple of Oklahoma universities. He appreciates the opportunities to speak in Oklahoma City area churches, public schools, clubs (such as Lions’ Club), and home small groups. Churches in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Red Cloud, Nebraska have also invited him to minister in their Sunday morning services.
Please write to email@example.com if you would like to schedule him to speak in your small group, Sunday School, Church or School. Thanks and God bless!
